In heart rhythm meditation we meditate with a mindful heart. To do this we place our awareness upon our heart while breathing consciously. So our awareness is on our heart and on our breath.
Many other kinds of mindful meditation will have you focusing on your breath and this is wonderful. But in our heart meditation practices we add awareness of the heart. So how’s that done?
First, you should start by focusing on your breathing and let it become slower, deeper, quieter and more rhythmic. This will give your mind something more to focus on that normal, unconscious, shallow breathing. Strive for a full, rhythmic breath with the inhales and exhales the same lenght approximately.
Now place your hand over your heart and let your awareness go to the center of your chest. Hold your breath for as long as you comfortably can and try to feel your heartbeat in your chest. The longer you can hold your breath, the more pronounced your heartbeat will become.
Also, you can contact a pulse point with two fingers, either on the wrist or neck area, like a nurse would do. Try to feel your pulse. The pulse is the echo of the heartbeat.
Now use this pulse as a counting rhythm and exhale to a count of 6 beats. Then inhale to a count of 6 beats. If this feels to fast then use 8 beats in and out.
So you are now breathing rhythmically and slowly to a count of 6 or 8 beats in and out. Congratulations, you now becoming mindful of your heart and are practicing heart rhythm meditation. This is the home-base practice and you can use it for your personal meditations. Just sit and do this practice for 20 minutes (or as long as you can if less than 20 minutes) and you will feel an amazing difference from how you felt before your meditation.
