When we focus on our hearts and breathe slowly and rhythmically  we begin to change the pattern of our heartbeats. The heart starts beating in sync with the breath. Slower, rhythmic breathing is key.

Heart Rhythms Stressed

Non-Coherent Heart Rhythms

Here you can see a graph of a typical heart rhythm. This is a measurement of your heartrate in beats-per-minute (bpm). The heart is always speeding up and slowing down. It doesn’t just beat at a constant speed.

Notice the spikes up and down. Those represent stress. The heart reacts to stress by speeding up quickly. It’s like the fight-or-flight syndrome. This is hard on the heart.

Here is a graph of a coherent heart rhythm. Notice the smooth wave pattern. The heart rhythms are entrained with the breath rhythm. A smooth breathing pattern leads to a smooth heart rhythm pattern. This pattern is much easier on the heart. It shows cardiac coherence.

What’s happening is that the heart rhythms are synchronized with my breath rhythms. A nice and rhythmic breath creates a nice and rhythmic heart rhythm as seen on the emWave graph. This is healthy for the heart.
