My heart awakening has been a process that began when I took my first meditation class. It was a heart rhythm meditation class and I knew nothing about it. I had always wanted to learn meditation but had never taken a class before. But finally, I got into a class after receiving an email from a friend about a local meditation class.
The first meditations we did emphasized the breathing and heart. I felt good after trying it the first couple of times. And I thought to myself, this makes perfect sense. This is a meditation that keeps me in my body, centered in my heart, that gives me deep and satisfying meditations, and only takes 20 minutes a day to do! It just hit home with me immediately.
So I continued to practice, attend class, read, and take more advanced classes. But everything I’ve learned is based on those same basic heart rhythm practices I learned that first night.
I Am Heart
Prior to learning heart rhythm meditation I was very much a head person. I have a good mind and have always been able to compartmentalize life into different containers and keep them separate from one another. I thought that who I was was my mind.
But now, I would tell you that who I am is a being centered in my heart. In our practices we say that the heart is the light and the mind is the lampshade.
The heart beats out the rhythm for the entire body into every cell. This generates a strong electromagnetic field which is broadcast into the atmosphere around us. Other people are affected by our fields and we feel other people’s fields.
There is all kinds of information encoded in the heartbeat. This is a biofeedback system where you listen to your heartbeat and then your heart begins to speak. It says: here I am. Here I am. I am. I am.
And you descend further into the depth of your heart as your meditation deepens and you begin to feel like you are bathing in a pool of pure, emotional energy.
Living In the Present
So what is the heart awakening that I’ve experienced? It is a process where my heart is softer, more rhythmic, more aware, more full of feeling, full of strength and vitality and love.
I still live my life like everyone else and I have my dreams and my plans which my mind will help me carry out. But every morning, I sit in my chair and meditate for 20 minutes, focusing on my breath and heartbeat. Then I go about my day.
I notice that my days unfold with a certain grace now and even if there’s lots of drama (which there usually is!) I can stay centered in my heart and with a steady and rhythmic breath, I can face life heart-on and trust that whatever happens will be a function of the longing in my heart.
This is the awakening of my heart.
