Healthy Heart Month is also known as National Heart Month as promoted by the American Heart Association.
It’s a great time for us all to be reminded of the vital role our hearts play in our lives and the lives of others.
This is a great time to give attention to our hearts.
Healing the Whole Heart
The heart is much more than just a physical pump. It is the center of our energetic system, our connection to our emotional body and also the gateway to our spiritual self.
The amazing thing is, we can do practices during healthy heart month (and every month) which will heal our heart on many different levels.
Heart Coherence Practice for Healthy Heart Month
- Bring your attention to your heart area in the middle of your chest. Place your hand over your heart. Be comforted by your own heart.
- Breathe more slowly and deeply and imagine that your heart is breathing. The breath is flowing in and out of your heart.
- Now think of something or someone that you appreciate very much. It can be a special place or person or even a pet.
Hold that feeling of appreciation in your heart-space while continuing to breath slowly and deeply and rhythmically.
Feel yourself moving into a more positive emotional state.
Your heart will shift into a more coherent state. This is a state of balance and relaxation. Your heartbeat will slow and become more regular.
Continue this practice as long as you like.
If you practice this several times a day you will increase your heart’s resilience to the stresses of life and you will feel balanced between your heart and mind.
Create Rhythmic Heart Rhythms
Your heartbeat is constantly speeding up and slowing down. This is part of your nervous system. This is called heart rate variability.
When we are stressed our heart rhythms are irregular (see graphic) and we feel out of balance.
When we are in a state of coherence or gratitude, our heart rhythms become rhythmic and regular like a smooth wave. We feel relaxed and in balance.
